FOR CLIENTS

Approximately 300 Californians with a wide variety of developmental disabilities currently live at Lanterman Developmental Center. Many have lived at Lanterman for several decades. It is their home. The choice to move from Lanterman – or move to Lanterman – should be left to individuals and their families, not left up to the state.

FOR TAXPAYERS

Costs per client are often cited as a reason for closure of developmental centers. But as centers’ populations are cut and other Californians aren’t allowed to come to Lanterman, costs per client naturally appear higher. In fact, a peer-reviewed study found that large savings aren’t possible by transferring people from developmental center to community settings when an honest, complete comparison of all costs is made.* Lanterman residents have very significant needs that must be met wherever they reside. Savings are only possible if these fragile Californians are denied life-sustaining services. Developmental centers provide a bigger bang for the taxpayer buck than other care options.

FOR PROFESSIONAL CARE

Lanterman is filled with dedicated professional staff who have decades of experience in caring for people with developmental disabilities. Doctors, clinicians, nurses, psychiatric technicians and many other professions are all on hand 24/7 to assist these Californians with their needs. Comparable professional services and employees aren’t available in less regulated group homes, which rely primarily on unlicensed caregivers. If Lanterman closes, its professional staff – and their expertise – are lost for good.
